Women in STEM program is one of the core Programs of the MKF that runs several initiatives focused on the women in STEM, providing an engaging platform for Academia, Governments, Corporate and Women Executives, Entrepreneurs and Leaders to interact, educate, mentor, guide as well as share knowledge and experiences for inspiring a global shift in the attitude towards Women in STEM.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math is what the world Economy is going towards. 80% of the jobs in the next decade will require technology skills. STEM occupations are growing at much faster rate in comparison to the other occupations. Very soon there will not be any job for people who do not have Science, Technology and Engineering skills. STEM is the future and the equal representation of both men and women is essential for an inclusive growth. Presently, women in world over are lagging behind in embracing the Science & Engineering career. Women make up 27% of the workforce in Science. There needs to be greater emphasis on bringing women into these careers and opportunities. If women do not take active part and interest in being part of STEM revolution, they will fall out of race of being equal participant in the world economy.
At almost every step of the STEM education ladder, we see girls walk away. Research also indicates that by seventh grade most girls have lost interest in these fields, and very few high school girls plan to pursue STEM in college compared to their male counterparts. Some studies also reveal that the choices made by women in their educational lives, especially early years of education, are the cause for the ill-representation of women in STEM subjects and STEM careers.
If women—who account for half the world’s working-age population—do not achieve their full economic potential, the global economy will suffer. A study has found that if women participate in the economy identically to men, it would add up to $28 trillion, or 26 percent, to annual global GDP by 2025 compared with a business-as-usual scenario. This impact is roughly equivalent to the size of the combined Chinese and US economies!
